On October 10, 2000, our beloved Boston Terrier, Wally, died from complications arising
from congestive heart failure. The loss was devastating for both of us, but for me, Wally
was my first canine love, and the hurt was especially deep.

Like many, after a period of grieving, we planned on getting a puppy, but not long after
Wally passed, Deanna began looking for available Boston Terriers on Petfinder. One day
she came upon a 12 and 13 year brother sister pair who had been owner surrendered to a
shelter outside of Seattle. Something came over her, and she immediately knew we had
to save those babies, so she came to me with the idea. Not wanting to possibly
experience heartache so soon after losing Wally, I initially balked at the idea. Why would
we want to adopt a pair that was so “old”, whose health was failing, and besides, they
were “someone else’s dogs.”  Deanna was determined, and kept on, and ultimately I
relented, and as soon as I did, she jumped in her car and drove literally non-stop from
Sacramento to Seattle to rescue this pair.

Feisty and Taffy came home in the next few days, and it did not take me long to realize
what Deanna already knew, and thus began our love affair and commitment to senior
and special needs animals.  Feisty and Taffy later became Chance and Bliss, and it was
our dear friend and the Best Man at our wedding, Lary Bucher, who suggested the
sanctuary be called A Chance for Bliss.

We therefore began this work seemingly by accident (now recognized as divine
appointment). As our history page suggests, we started out slowly, but have gathered
more and more momentum over the years. We are now an official public charity and
currently the sanctuary is home to more than 60 animals. Each and every one of our
residents had become displaced due to no fault of their own. Some for reasons which are
easy to understand and some for reasons we will never understand. Most of our flock
was deemed to be un-adoptable, or even disposable due to their age or condition. Some
of our newest arrivals have found their way here as the result of the recent housing
crisis, while others became homeless as a result of a domestic dispute. And there are
others still who we think just showed up for the food .

Running the sanctuary is a full time job and then some.  Deanna holds the positions of
Vice President and Treasurer, and I, the position of President.

By caring for this unique segment of the animal world, our intent is to provide a
previously overlooked and underserved population a safe haven to live out their lives in
a setting which affords them dignity, grace, love, and peace.  In doing our work our first
priority is of course the care of the residents, but equally important is our goal to educate
the community at large as to the benefits of adopting a senior or special needs animal. In
doing so, we hope to accomplish our goal of increasing the likelihood that a greater
number of these types of animals will be adopted from local rescues and shelters, and
that more and more will also find
